“Be Still”
SCRIPTURE
Be still, and know that I am God. —Psalm 46:10
DEVOTIONAL
Father Richard Rohr is a Franciscan Priest and founder of the Center for Action and Contemplation. He is a profound theologian who argues that we, as humans, often have a hard time sitting still to the detriment of our relationship with God. So Rohr suggests this simple practice of repeating the words from Psalm 46, “Be still and know that I am God” can help us move deeper into the stillness, silence, and trust. However, there is a method to his wisdom. Try it.
- Find a quiet place to sit comfortably, gently close your eyes and take a few deep breaths.
- Either aloud or quietly to yourself, say the words, “Be still and know that I am God.”
- After a couple deep breaths, pray, “Be still and know that I am.”
- After a couple deep breaths, pray “Be still and know.”
- After a couple deep breaths, pray, “Be still.”
- After a couple deep breaths, pray, “Be.”
- Hold the silence as long as you can.
- When ready, pray, “Amen.”
