A Stephen Minister can offer comfort and spiritual support to others who are experiencing loss; a difficult transition; a separation or divorce; illness, including chronic conditions and hospitalization; depression or loneliness; a spiritual crisis; fertility challenges; being homebound or institutionalized; a period of unemployment or other business or financial crisis.

Learn about tutoring an elementary student this year with Heart Math Tutoring, Helping Education, and Augustine Literacy Project at an information session on September 11th from 6-7pm. This will take place onsite at church (during children’s choir practice) and be broadcast simultaneously on Zoom. Committed to the vow we made to your family to lead, guide and nurture the children baptized at First Presbyterian Church, we invite you to join us Wednesday, September 18th at 6:00pm in P-206 and/or by Zoom. This class will teach parents about what baptism means in our church, how to fulfill the baptismal vows at home, and to support you as parents in early childhood faith formation. This one-hour class, designed to equip families with knowledge and support that they need, is sure to be an hour well spent amongst families in similar stages of life. With the support of the community gathered, we look forward to learning together and having a lot of fun doing it! Parents are required to attend this class one time only. The class will be offered quarterly.

Each month, we gather together to make sandwiches for our unsheltered neighbors at Roof Above. Join in on the fun and fellowship of assembly lines of volunteers – young and old, making up to 300 hearty sandwiches handed out daily to the visitors at the College Street campus. In September, the youth will make the sandwiches during their Sunday School hour.

We will kick off our PW year by gathering after church for a luncheon and program. The cost of lunch is $15 per person. We will hear from a representative from Moms Moving Forward (MMF), a program of Freedom Communities and the recipient of our 2024 Birthday Dinner Offering. MMF is a 12-month program for single mothers and their children with a home zip code of 28208, including moms from our partner school, Westerly Hills Academy. In addition, directories will be available, plans for the year ahead will be discussed, and new staff members at FPC will be introduced.

The Department of Justice is hosting United Against Hate events across the country the week of September 21-27. The First Presbyterian Church Advocacy Committee, in partnership with the Charlotte office of the US Attorney, will host a screening of the film “Repairing The World,” which is a film about the Tree of Life shooting and how the community came together across all religions, races, and ethnicities to stand up against hate in their community. A short discussion panel will follow.

What is Confirmation? In Confirmation, youth explore what it means to be Presbyterian, what it means to be part of the Church, and what it means to lead faithful lives. Over the course of several weeks, Confirmands wrestle with tough questions, observe Christian practices, and consider how faith enriches their world. Topics of discussion include God, Jesus, the Holy Spirit, Presbyterian polity, worship, doctrine, scripture, service, sacraments, and prayer. At the end of the Confirmation process, youth create a faith statement to share with members of the Session who will approve them for membership in the church. Who can participate in Confirmation? Confirmation is offered primarily to 8th and 9th grade students. Any high school youth who have not yet completed Confirmation may enroll as well. Confirmation Mentors Faith Formation happens in community. Youth have big thoughts and big questions throughout this process, and it is important for them to have a support system in those moments. An essential part of that support system is the Confirmation Mentor.
