As we approach the shortest day of the year, this hymn’s imagery of darkness and light speaks to me.
“Dark and cheerless is the morn unaccompanied by thee.” That is to say,
“Without the light of our Savior, the world is dark, cold, and bleak.”
“…till thy mercy’s beams I see.”
“Until the true light of the Christ child enters the world…to redeem us, to
save us from our sins.”
As we draw closer to the return of the Prince of Peace, may we not
despair, but look for the growing light on the horizon… “shining to the
perfect day”… that is on the way
